UK Decries Israel's Gaza Aid Restrictions
The British government described the restrictive actions as an "affront" to the foundational principles of the United Nations Charter.
"The devastation in Gaza is heartbreaking. Children are starving, and Israel's drip-feeding of aid has horrified the world. These are an affront to the values of the Charter of the United Nations," stated Foreign Secretary David Lammy in an address to the UN Security Council.
His remarks highlighted the UK's growing frustration with Israel's handling of aid distribution.
Lammy further declared, "It is with the hand of history on our shoulders that His Majesty's government therefore intends to recognize the State of Palestine when the UN General Assembly gathers in September here in New York," reaffirming a decision already made public by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier in the day.
Starmer emphasized that the UK would proceed with recognition "unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of a two-state solution."
His statement signaled an effort to intensify diplomatic pressure on Tel Aviv to change course.
In his speech, Lammy noted that over the next eight weeks — the lead-up to the UN General Assembly in New York — the British government at 10 Downing Street will work to "affect the situation on the ground" in Gaza.
However, Lammy acknowledged that "recognition by itself will not change the situation on the ground."
He underlined the UK's concurrent practical actions, which include collaborating with Jordan to conduct humanitarian airdrops, transferring wounded children to hospitals in Britain, and pushing for the reinstatement of United Nations aid programs.
